Our Year in Review: Meta’s 2024 Highlights

As 2024 concludes, we’re looking back at the products, updates and initiatives that marked a year of innovation at Meta. 2024 was a year of pushing our products forward while adding helpful new features for users and working to keep people safe across our platforms.

These highlights provide a quick overview of some of the year’s biggest accomplishments as we look forward to 2025.

Looking Forward With Orion, Open Source AI and More

In 2024, we introduced Meta Llama 3, an AI assistant that we believe to be the most advanced one available for free.

Built using open source AI, Meta Llama 3 can be used across Meta’s apps to help you plan a trip, study and more. Earlier this year, our CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, wrote an open letter about open source AI’s potential to affect meaningful change. And more companies are using Meta Llama 3 to build technology for the public good, for example to localize educational content and increase access to medical information in low-resource communities.

In addition to AI, we made industry-leading advancements in digital interactivity when we introduced Orion, our first “true” AR glasses, and a standard the tech world has been building toward for years. We also released the Meta Quest 3S, our most affordable mixed reality glasses yet, for purchase, and we brought to market Ray-Ban Meta glasses with even more smart features, like helping you remember where you parked and real-time speech translation.

And with Threads, we began incorporating Meta’s apps into the fediverse, a new ecosystem that allows users to connect across social networks.

Adding the Features You Asked For

We’re always looking to enhance your experience across our family of apps by adding features that continually raise the bar, and this year was no different.

For WhatsApp, we improved call quality and made in-group calling more flexible, plus we introduced enhanced AI features for business chats and a new way to schedule events. Over on Threads, we added exciting new web features to help businesses and creators get the most out of the platform – insights, post scheduling and multiple drafts.

We also focused on making sure your experience on Instagram reflects you – who you are, what you want to see and what you create. In addition to features allowing you edit DMs and pin chats, we introduced new ways to connect through Instagram DMs, including nicknames and location sharing, making Instagram an even more vibrant place to connect.

If you want a fresh start, you can now reset the recommendations you see on Instagram’s Explore, Reels and Feed pages, so the content you see is meant for you. And for creators, Instagram’s new trial reels let creators show your reels to non-followers first to test how they perform.

Keeping Our Platforms Safe

In 2024, we stayed vigilant about security and safety, adapting our platforms for a digital landscape.

We introduced Teen Accounts to Instagram, giving teens automated protections against harmful content and interactions. We introduced tools to help disrupt and protect teens from sextortion scams and collaborated with industry leaders and peers to take down self-harm content.

End-to-end encryption on Messenger secures your conversations by making it so that nobody sees them except you and the people you’re messaging with.

Finally, we recognize that as the use of AI matures, protections have to mature, too. That’s why we now add “AI info” labels to a wider range of audio, image and video content that we detect to be AI-generated, while keeping that content live.

We spent 2024 innovating, updating and protecting – pushing technology forward while keeping your experience secure. It was a strong year, and we’re excited for the next one.
