Facebook Ships More Control

Today, Facebook announced that it will begin testing a new addition to its suite of News Feed controls: Keyword Snooze, which hides posts in your News Feed containing your selected phrase from any person, Page or Group for 30 days.

We asked Product Design VP Julie Zhuo to give us an overview of Facebook’s approach to designing controls; hear her response in the video above.

As Julie notes in the video, teams have to understand “the moments in which these controls are going to be most useful for people.” Keyword Snooze can be accessed from a post’s upper right-hand menu, so as soon as you stumble on a TV spoiler or a celebratory post for that soccer game you haven’t watched yet, you can take action to avoid those unwanted posts in your News Feed.

Whenever Facebook product teams launch a new control, like See First, Hide, Unfollow, or Snooze, they face a crucial design challenge: How to help people tailor their experience without having to wade through complicated settings pages. Recently, Julie and other Facebook leaders spoke to CNN about how the company is thinking about designing controls that people will actually take advantage of.
